A taste of Belgium
We travel to Belgium, or to be more precise Brussels and Bruges. We go to a beer festival, visit a hop plantation and then continue to the Trappist monastery Saint Sixtus in Westvleteren, where we taste what is considered the world’s best beer, Westvleteren XII (12). After the tasting experiences at the monastery, we visit the picturesque chocolate town of Bruges and make our own chocolate creams.
Belgien Beer Weekend in Brussels
Beer of world class – there is lots of that in Brussels’s Grand Place on the first weekend of September. That is the time of the Belgian Beer Weekend. We meet our beer guide who will take us around the many breweries in the square. He also comes along on other beer-related adventures in this episode.et.
Hop plantation in ‘t Hoppecruyt
We make a lightning visit to ‘t Hoppecruyt, a few hours outside Brussels. We learn more about one of the most important ingredients for beer – hops. The hop taste was initially a side effect, as in the beginning the plant was only added to prevent the beer from turning sour.
Sanctified beer – Trappist
The Trappist monastery Saint Sixtus in Westvleteren, where Martin and his guide Stijn Van Houdt taste what some consider the world’s best beer, Westvleteren XII (12).
The chocolate town of Bruges
Belgium’s Venice, Bruges, is a picturesque town with a history as a textile metropolis. Today, chocolate is a bigger attraction. There are about 50 producers and shops within a relatively small area, giving Bruges the highest chocolate density in the world. We try making our own chocolate creams and take the results home.
