Camping and wilderness holidays go hand in hand. In this episode we discover the beautiful nature and fauna of Jämtland and Västerbotten. We stay at Kraja Camping and Hotings Camping. We fly-fish for grayling and go on a hike with a packhorse in the wilderness to Sweden’s longest cave, Korallgrottan.
Sauna raft on Hornhavan
We book a raft and make our way out onto Sweden’s deepest lake, Hornhavan. On board there is a wood-burning sauna – perfect for warming up before jumping into the cold water. We suggest you take your fishing equipment. With a bit of luck you may catch a char for dinner. There is also a barbecue on the raft.

In Ammarnäs nature is wonderfully unspoilt, and in the water you can see the fish keep watch. From here, you can reach many types of fishing in a short time. We book a guide to help us with the basics of fly-fishing, and it soon brings results.

Hiking with a packhorse in Jämtland
Hiking is wonderful and even nicer in the company of a friend who is also happy to carry your equipment and necessities. You choose how long or how far you want to walk. We are aiming for Korallgrottan.

Korallgrottan – Sweden’s longest cave system
We get help from two cave guides to explore the hollowed out limestone on the border between Sweden and Norway. On the guided tour, we go 500 metres down. The tour takes two hours.

Kraja Camping
Kraja is a Sami word that means roughly ‘the place to which you long to go’. Here you are in the heart of Lapland. The four-star campsite offers about 60 pitches and roughly the same number of cottages. There is a fully licensed restaurant and outdoor seating with worthwhile views, to say the least.
Hotings Camping
Hotings Camping is open all the year round and offers 24 pitches, and cabins located high up with views over the nearby swimming lake. The service building has showers, toilets, a kitchen and laundry room. For a fun family day, there is the children’s Motorland, mini-golf and Frisbee golf.
